So a Walmart and an overabundance of resturants is regarded as progress for a successful city. Flag as offensiveLogin or register to post comments YES it is Submitted by shelley on June 30, 2011 - 8:19pm. Yes it is when it can supply abundance of jobs to it's citizens. Where do you know oh a successful city that has a high unemployment rate. Flag as offensiveLogin or register to post comments Sure, but. Flag as offensiveLogin or register to post comments If you only knew Submitted by shelley on June 30, 2011 - 9:28pm. If you only knew to whom you are speaking to you would definitely close your trap. Maybe you should have some respect for others instead of spewing your ignorance so all can see. With ECU growing where do you expect the new students to work. Or did your mommy and daddy support your ignorant butt while you were in school. Would you hire them or just let the government take care of them. Or did your mommy and daddy support your ignorant butt while you were in school. Would you hire them or just let the government take care of them. You know nothing about me yet spout personal attacks. What I already know is the way you talk to people who don't agree with everything you say is disgusting. Both my wife and I are ECU employees so I doubt anything I say you would agree with anyway. Instead of only employing the students for short term, lets try to keep them here when they graduate. I have a family and am invested in this city so I would love for it to grow bigger and better. I did realize early on though that your wonderful low paying jobs are just not enough to bring someone above the poverty line. Flag as offensiveLogin or register to post comments Really. And you don't think that maybe that some of these workers will strive for better things if they work a crappy job first. Your comment about waitress was disrespectful to those who have less. Then I thought that this must be Calvin and his smart mouth. As for keep ECU grads here, good luck with that when allot of the landowners, investors and developers on HWY 33 are ECU GRADS. Is this is ECU way of treating the alumni good luck in expect a financial donation. It was you who made the first personal attack by assuming that I was a waitress and I just stating the facts. You should know better then assume that everyone who supports the rezoning is ignorant and uneducated. As for Noel's letter stating that they need to put the Walmart near the low income residents just show how arrogant some of Mercer's supporters can be. The same ones who spoke badly of Lowes are there every weekend (like me) Shopping there. I don't shop at Walmart often but if I do have to go, I go to the Washington one. As for more restaurants, obviously we must need them because they keep building them and they are always full. We waited over an hour to be seated at Cheddar's the other night and a friend of mine waited 45 minutes at the Texas roadhouse the same night. The waitress or cashier comment was not directed to you personally. Guess I should have said "A person's aspirations" instead. I never once assumed you or anyone was ignorant or uneducated. Nice to hear you admit that all these new opportunities for our citizens are indeed "crappy jobs". Why couldn't we get Boeing or similar big manufacturer to want to locate their plant here. Yes, I too like the Washington Walmart as well and Lowes has become my second home recently. Flag as offensiveLogin or register to post comments Check my comments Submitted by shelley on July 1, 2011 - 8:53am. You didn't get called ignorant until your waitress comment. You still haven't answered the question of where do you expect all the Pitt Co. And knowing how many have criminal records, most before they had dropout, would you hire them. Like it or not there are allot of applicants for these jobs and they will not have a problem filling the positions. As for waitresses, what restaurant do you go to that doesn't have ECU students as their wait staff. I applaud these students who work and go to school at the same time, it will be a good reminder for them of what could of been without a degree. As for the ECU Staff, I have read their nasty e-mails about the landowners and I do have copies of their petitions so I do know who's on them. Not all professor are in agreement with Mercer and some of them are good friends. We can not force someone to want to better themselves, and so that is why we will always need these jobs in the future. Flag as offensiveLogin or register to post comments Again. I do think it interesting that you find it so egregious to be called a waitress. I'm done with that as I already explained it wasn't directed at you and apologized. No excuse though, for your hate filled tirade towards me which was way off base. I already answered your question when I agreed with you that the jobs are good for that certain demographic. You haven't answered mine when I asked why we cant get bigger corporations to move or build their facilities here. Yes there is indeed the need for low paying jobs for the drop outs and ones with criminal histories but there is also a need for better opportunities for the college graduate or educated/ learning professional. They would have no problem filling those positions as well. The problem is I don't hear any plans to bring them here. Flag as offensiveLogin or register to post comments Gecko or Mercer. I have a business to run and I'm tired of this tic for tac conversation. One of the biggest reason Greenville doesn't attract bigger corporations is that the airport is way too small. Lockheed and Boeing need an airport that have the word "International" in their titles. She is being paid 108K a year and just what is she doing to attract business to Greenville. To attack Jon Day and Collice Moore for being the Realtors for the landowners is taking it too far. So far we have heard this kind of personal attack from B. Also isn't this a mute point when these rezonings have been heard and the final decisions have been made. Flag as offensiveLogin or register to post comments Get out your checkbook Submitted by Boondoggle on June 30, 2011 - 12:00pm. The owners are not forcing businesses to build up the area. If you do not want to see that "beautiful" stretch of highway (littered with shelled out mobile homes) and the luxurious downtown Grimesland desecrated by tax generating businesses, simply buy the land. The city of Greenville could buy it and maybe relocate the theater out there. Should I tell you to never sell your car and buy a new one. By buying a new one you are adding to the problem of more vehicles on the road which leads to more emissions and more pollution. Doesn't sounds right; let's give Stalin his rule book back. Flag as offensiveLogin or register to post comments This letter is precious Submitted by shelley on June 29, 2011 - 3:45pm. West Virginian are known for the low income and severe unemployment for decades and if if wasn't for Coal Mining it would have been worse. You should be happy that any business would want to even come here. To Pepe: I live near this site too and my neighbors and I can't wait to see what restaurants will follow because of the Walmart being built here. I'm so tired of driving across town to get to a decent restaurant just to get a bite to eat. The majority of us who live in the ETJ want the Walmart and restaurants and you are definitely in the minority. Just wait until Greenvllie is finished with it's beltway, which is planned to go pass the Simpson turn off. And take the Professor "Mercer" with you so he can make you a radio from a coconut. Flag as offensiveLogin or register to post comments Let see Submitted by shelley on June 30, 2011 - 8:12pm. Their petition to the city was over 50% ECU Professor and most don't even live near HWY33 ie. Flag as offensiveLogin or register to post comments i avoid going to walmart when Submitted by peppe on June 29, 2011 - 12:34pm. Flag as offensiveLogin or register to post comments You keep talking about Walmart Submitted by shelley on June 29, 2011 - 7:51pm. You keep talking about Walmart when it's already a done deal. Sounds like a big waste of time and energy for nothing. But go ahead and bang your head against the wall while the rest of us laugh at you. Flag as offensiveLogin or register to post comments Balance Submitted by Harvey101 on June 29, 2011 - 12:08pm. Lets think about all this idea that the developers are bad for making a profit. Marion receives money from a business that destroys trees to make newspapers that is best used to line a bird cage. Calvin is in education and is filling the minds of young people with ideas that have already gotten this country in financial troubles spend on everything that does not make money. Ask yourself how many of them are invested in various finanical areas that pay them with the profit. The paper pays it's employees with profits, the school pays for new buildings, and salaries through profit. They all have some form of a retirement plan that is paid into the individual accounts and these are profits. Profiting from ones material assets or property is not a bad thing. The Socialist/Communistic attitude that making money is bad (because they are not the ones making the money)and green and liberal is the only answer has been proven to be wrong throught history. The elitist of Greenville want not in my backyard, they want parks and feel good projects that don't produce revenue. Just look at how one sided the representation was from Marion on the Wal-Mart issue. She said everyone was against the location when in fact only the Elitist bunch opposed the new store. Calvin represents his own small agenda and hides behind fake names when writing responses and editorials and then has to back peddle on his own website to hide the fact he was wrong on some issues. They only represent a small cross section of the districts that elected them. Let's elect leaders that represent the City and the Citizens as a whole not just the limited political power bases with limited agendas. Mort there is no coal here, just the desire of the majority of the people to be business friendly and promote planned, structured development. You, Mercer and Blackburn need to go live in some isolated third world country where you don't need electricity and can ride your bikes everywhere. Here the overwhelming majoriy of us want development and do not wish to spend non-existent tax dollars on greenways and bike lanes. Save those initiatives for when the economy is better, something new development and businesses will help promote.
